AI as Another Software Shift

Gergely Orosz argues software engineering pays more due to fast change, and AI is just another shift requiring adaptability.

Key points

  • @GergelyOrosz says software engineering pays more, is more flexible (WFH/remote) and has better perks than other engineering fields because the field changes much faster and fewer people are able or willing to pick up new technologies and methodologies quickly.
  • @GergelyOrosz says the field had ~10-20 years of stability, and that AI is just another tech wave: software engineers who pick it up and master it will generally fare better, while those who do not will struggle a lot more.
  • @ChrisCamillo says the world's most accomplished tech founders and business leaders are betting hundreds of billions on AI with extraordinary conviction, while much of the investing world thinks they are making a massive mistake.

I think many of us working in tech tend to forget that the reason software engineering vs other engineering fields pays (a lot!) more, is a lot more flexible (WFH/remote), and has better perks: Because this field changes much faster than other engineering fields. The premium is because fewer people are able/willing to pick up new technologies, methodologies so quickly. But the field had ~10-20 years of stability, and so lots of folks forgot this is why a premium exists. And that AI is just another tech wave: software engineers who pick it up and master it will generally fare better; those not will struggle a lot more.

Reaction on X: Replies mostly agree with the main post, with one arguing that many engineers across all experience levels feel entitled to their dev jobs not changing, and another saying people should get familiar with AI even if they despise it because it is here to stay. The original author also replies, asking readers to compare pay, equity, remote work and living abroad with friends in mechanical, electrical, civil or chemical engineering.
