Key points

  • @poteto argued that software will need to be rebuilt and rewritten to adapt to a faster pace, with code written as a continuous stream rather than arriving one drop at a time.
  • @poteto said AI has brought an elastic and capable workforce wielded by every engineer, and that systems must evolve so agents can thrive.
  • @dhh said there is nothing scandalous in the Proton CTO's AI memo, calling it hilarious that 404 is treating it as such and saying employees in revolt are in for a rough ride.
  • @josephfcox shared a Proton CTO's AI manifesto, saying he obtained multiple copies of it.

we will need to rebuild and rewrite much of software to adapt to a new, faster pace. code used to arrive one drop at a time. soon, if not already, code will be written as if it were a continuous stream, like a violent river twisting and turning as it pleases. this is not a new thing: big tech cos have had to deal with this with the enormous scale of their engineering teams. but now ai has brought an incredibly elastic and capable workforce wielded by every engineer. this is your problem now, and the only way to adapt is to evolve your systems so agents - even and especially the ones with little context about the right way of doing things - can thrive. make the easy thing the right thing. your codebase is becoming organic architecture. agent contributions grow around the constraints and guardrails you’ve designed. good software engineering matters even more now! and no, the continuous stream of code is not something you have to watch helplessly. be more ambitious and design systems, frameworks, and languages to control the chaos. the time for mourning coding is long overQuoting @josephfcox: Here is Proton CTO's AI manifesto, that I obtained multiple copies of https://t.co/6o7G2teu9A https://t.co/d92L1kv8AU

Reaction on X: The replies are largely supportive of the original post, with the author arguing that orgs refusing to adapt need shock therapy. Others push back: one says calling pentesting a "weak loser mentality" is bad, another says the lack of CLIs/APIs makes Proton unusable in the age of agents, and one says the memo differs from the 404 article.
